Industry experts give evidence to Lords about role of Chief Scientific Advisers

Representatives from industry will be quizzed by the Lords Science and Technology Committee when they appear before them on Tuesday 29 November as part of their inquiry into the role of departmental Chief Scientific Advisers.
The Committee will hear from:
• Sir Kevin Tebbit, Chairman of Finmeccanica UK, an Italian-based Group, which operates globally in engineering in the aerospace, defence and security markets;
• Dr. Julian Braybrook, Director, Measurement Research Strategy, of LGC Science & Technology, an international science-based company dealing in analytical, forensic and diagnostic services;
• Ian Downie, Managing Director of Serco Science, who work for national and local governments across multiple sectors including health, education, transport, science and defence; and
• Jeremy Evans, Chairman of Intelligent Transport Systems UK, which provides a combination of Information Technology and telecommunications, allowing the provision of on-line information in all areas of public and private administration.
The Committee is expected to explore issues such as:
- their relationship with CSAs;
- how CSAs are perceived within the scientific industry;
- if they provide CSAs with advice to inform and challenge policy; and
- what they consider to be the most important skills and experience for a CSA to have and whether there is satisfactory range of expertise among CSAs at the moment.
The evidence sessions will take place on Tuesday 29 November at 10.40am in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
