Lord Ramsbotham, the former Chief Inspector of Prisons, Baroness Meacher, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Drugs Policy Reform and Lord Mancroft, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Drug Misuse will all appear before the House of Lords Home Affairs EU Sub-Committee this week, as part of their inquiry into the EU Drugs Strategy

Witnesses

At 11.15 am, Wednesday 23 November, Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster

  • Lord Ramsbotham, former Chief Inspector of Prisons
  • Baroness Meacher, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Drugs Policy Reform
  • Lord Mancroft, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Drug Misuse

The Committee are looking at the EU’s drug strategy ahead of the implementation of a new strategy for 2013-2020. The evidence session follows recent high profile calls for a rethink on drug strategy from organisations such as the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the former Head of MI5, Baroness Manningham-Buller.

The evidence session will see the Committee question the witnesses on issues such as:

  • whether the 2005-2012 EU Drug Strategy has worked and whether the policy is evidence based
  • why there has been no overall reduction in either supply or demand across the Member States over this time
  • if serious consideration should be given to decriminalisation of some or all drugs across the EU as part of the 2012-2020 drugs strategy
