Committee takes evidence on policing large scale disorder

The Home Affairs Committee will take evidence on policing large scale disorder on Tuesday 25 October 2011 at 11.15am in the Grimond Room, Portculis House.

The session provides an opportunity for the Committee to explore further the extent to which gangs played a role in the August disturbances, and to ask questions about some of the work that is already taking place to reduce the involvement of young people in gangs.
The Committee will also have the chance to ask the Secretary of State for Justice about some of his recent statements on the causes of the riots, and the statistics that have been produced by the Ministry of Justice.
Committee Chair Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP said:
“The number of young people charged following the riots and the possibility that they may have gang associations has dominated the agenda on the riots. I look forward to asking the Secretary of State for Justice why he feels they represent a feral underclass and how this may have led to the disturbances we witnessed in August.
“Waltham Forest Council, Kickz, and the Prince’s Trust are carrying out pioneering work to deter young people from becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour. I look forward to hearing their views and to discussing with them the involvement of gangs in the August disturbances.”
