Oral Evidence Session

Tuesday 1 November 2011 at 12.30 pm
Grimond Room, Portcullis House

Purpose of session:

The purpose of the session is to address concerns about the rules governing removals from the UK and the way in which they are enforced.

The Committee will have the opportunity to question the HM Chief Inspector of Prisons about practices at the Tinsley House Detention Centre at Gatwick and the arrangements for the supervision and monitoring of removals.

Committee Chair Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP said:

“The Chief Inspector’s report into the removals processes was undertaken after the concerns that this Committee raised last year has produced worrying results.

The casual ill-treatment of detainees, including the inappropriate use of physical restraint is unacceptable. I look forward to questioning him on this and the practice of taking detainees to the airport as ‘reserves’, to fill any places which might become vacant. We must ensure those who are to be deported are treated with respect and fairness.”

Witnesses:

12.30 pm to 1 pm
• Nick Hardwick CBE, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons
• Mr Hindpal Singh Bhui, Immigration Inspections Team Leader, HM Inspectorate of Prisons
