The EU Sub Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs, and International Trade heard evidence from the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Mark Hoban MP, for a short follow-up report on the Euro area crisis on Tuesday 25 October 2011.

The committee asked about what steps need to be taken to deal with the euro area crisis, how far the euro area crisis is being felt across global economies, and the impact of the crisis on the UK and on the UK’s position in the EU. Other areas of questioning included:

  • Whether there should be great fiscal integration among euro area countries
  • What steps it is appropriate for the UK to take to help solve the euro debt crisis, particularly being a non euro area country
  • Whether the UK would be sidelined as a result of more decisions being taken by euro area countries alone 
  • The robustness of UK banks to withstand shocks from the euro area
