Examining Government oversight of administrative justice

The Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) has decided to undertake a short inquiry into the Government’s plans for future oversight of the administrative justice system. This inquiry follows the Government’s announcement that it plans to abolish the Administrative Justice and Tribunals Council (AJTC) as part of its programme of reform of public bodies.
“Administrative justice” includes the procedures used by public authorities for making decisions in relation to individual people, the law that regulates decision-making, and the systems (such as tribunals and ombudsmen) that enable people to challenge these decisions. The statutory functions of the AJTC include keeping the system under review and considering ways to make the system accessible, fair and efficient.
The Committee proposes to take oral evidence on the subject from the AJTC and from the Ministry of Justice. Details of the oral evidence session will be announced shortly.
The Committee does not plan to publish an issues and questions paper for this inquiry. Submissions to the inquiry are invited as soon as possible, and no later than midday on Friday 11 November 2011 by email to pasc@parliament.uk . Further details on how to make a submission are set out below.
