Backbench debates on EU referendum and NHS care of older people

The Backbench Business Committee announces debates on the holding of an EU referendum to take place on Monday 24 October and NHS care of older people to take place on Thursday 27 October.
The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.
The committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:
Monday 24 October in the Chamber
Debate on a Motion relating to the holding of a national referendum on the UK's membership of the EU (Member in charge: Mr David Nuttall).

The subject for this debate was determined by the Backbench Business Committee following a representation by Mr David Nuttall MP at a public meeting of the committee on 18 October 2011. A large number of backbench Members indicated their support for the debate. This issue has also been raised in public petitions.

Thursday 27 October in Westminster Hall
A debate on NHS care of older people (Member in charge: Margot James).
The committee was told that this was a highly topical subject, in light of a recent report by the Care Quality Commission into the care of older people in NHS hospitals, and that it addresses a constituency issue of importance to many backbenchers, which has not recently been debated in the Chamber.
