Does the EU have a military role?

The National Security Adviser, Sir Peter Ricketts GCMG, faced questions from the House of Lords EU Sub Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy on Thursday, 13 October 2011, about European security.

The Committee is looking at what military capabilities are available to the European Union and asked Sir Peter Ricketts for his assessment of security threats and challenges facing the EU and how equipped the EU is to deal with such threats.

Questions also covered whether the EU depends too much on the military capabilities of the UK and France, and what the USA expects of Europe in defence terms.
