Purpose of session

The session gives the committee the opportunity to explore the causes of and response to the riots at the beginning of August, with a particular focus on what happened in Manchester, Birmingham and Nottinghamshire.

The Committee will also be questioning the three main providers in the area of social media on the role of social media in spreading the disorder and in their response to it.

Committee Chair Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP said:

"The Committee is determined to understand both the causes and the responses to the August riots. As part of this process it is essential that we hear from chief police officers from across the country.

It is clear that social media played a role in the disturbances—both in spreading the disorder and in the response to it—and this session will give us the opportunity to discuss the role of social media with the main companies in this field."
