Lords Committee questions Justice Secretary on European Convention on Human Rights

Kenneth Clarke, Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, will appear before the House of Lords Justice and Institutions Sub-Committee on Wednesday 14 September in a one-off evidence session about the EU’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Although all EU Member States are members of the ECHR in their own right, the European Union is committed by the Treaty of Lisbon to seeking accession to the ECHR. This will give the EU a separate seat at the Council of Europe table, while making the EU Institutions subject to the Convention.

The Committee will probe the Lord Chancellor on issues including:
- How UK citizens will be affected
- Whether accession to the ECHR will mean changes to the EU’s legal system
