Lord Berkeley, Chairman of the Rail Freight Group (RFG) appeared before the House of Lords EU Internal Market, Energy and Transport Committee on Monday 12 September.

This was the penultimate evidence session in the inquiry, which is investigating the development of international rail passenger services in the EU, using the Channel Tunnel as a case study. The committee hopes to take further evidence from Eurotunnel before considering its findings and reporting later this year.

Lord Berkeley faced questions from the Committee on issues including:

  • Whether the future looks promising for the development of international freight and passenger rail services throughout the EU
  • What the RFG's opinion is of the recently established Independent Regulators Group
  • The Transport Minister's comments that freight operators already benefit from a subsidy to operate through the Channel Tunnel and that any additional subsidies should not come from the public purse
