Karel de Gucht, EU Trade Commissioner, appeared before the House of Lords EU Economic and Financial Affairs and International Trade Sub-Committee.

Commissioner de Gucht provided the committee with an update on the direction of EU trade policy.

The committee questioned the Commissioner on issues such as:

  • What role he thinks trade can play in increasing the EU's competitiveness following the recent economic crisis
  • What the EU is doing to strengthen trade and investment links with major partners such as Russia, China, Japan and the United States
  • Why the EU are proposing changes to the generalised tariff preferences scheme that will cut the number of countries eligible to take part
