Metropolitan Police Commissioner appears before Home Affairs Committee

This session gives the Home Affairs Committee the opportunity to question the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police six months after taking office.

Purpose of session
The subject matter of the hearing is likely to include the recent claims being made concerning racism in the organisation; the affect of organisational change, including the loss of several senior officers; the shift of accountability to the Mayor's Office for Police and Crime; the impact of the Winsor recommendations on officer morale; and the allegations of improper relations between the police and the media.
Committee Chair Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP said:
"It has been six months since the Committee last heard from the Commissioner. Within that time the force has been the subject of allegations of improper relations with the media, the departure of several senior officers, and most recently of claims of racism within the force.
This has come at a time when the Winsor Review is proposing major changes to officers’ pay and conditions and the force is adapting to new accountability structures.
Members of the Committee have expressed their concerns about the most recent allegations of racism that have surfaced in the last two weeks. We hope the Commissioner will be able to update the Committee on the action that he has taken."
