The Home Affairs Committee questions senior police officials and academics regarding the threat of e-crime.

Chair's comments
Committee Chair Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP said:
“One year on from the launch of the Government’s Cyber Security Strategy we will be asking the UK’s e-crime leads about the progress made to date in equipping police forces to tackle e-crime. We will also be asking them about the likely impact of the big organisational changes to national e-crime units with the introduction of the National Crime Agency next year.
Concerns have been raised about whether cyber criminals receive a punishment that fits the crime. 22% of online fraud victims have reported being at risk of bankruptcy or reported receiving medical treatment as a result of the fraud committed against them. The Committee will be exploring the causes of this and how they can best be overcome.
We will also be taking evidence from Professor Ross Anderson and Professor Peter Sommer. We will be asking them about the difficulties in measuring e-crime and possible improvements to legislation and banking regulations. We will also ask them for an independent assessment of the progress made in implementing the goals of the Cyber Security Strategy that are related to e-crime.
