MPs visit Cornwall to discuss marine science

Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the Committee, said:

"The Science and Technology Committee has been hearing evidence on marine science in recent weeks and is visiting Falmouth for its next evidence session. This gives us the opportunity to see some of the broader context for marine science outside of Westminster. I’m looking forward to visiting the area and hearing from local people involved in the marine conservation zone process."

Local MP Sarah Newton, who is also a Member of the Science and Technology Committee, said:

"I am delighted that the Science and Technology Select Committee is visiting Falmouth as part of its inquiry into marine science. This visit ensures that the Committee will be able to hear from a range of stakeholders about the local context for marine conservation zones and ongoing discussions concerning the Fal’s future.

Marine science is a field that has an increasing role within policy making and it is welcome that Falmouth’s experience can be taken into account as the Select Committee considers how this role can develop in future."

The evidence session will be held on Thursday 20 December 2012, at the Tremough Campus, Falmouth University (formerly University College Falmouth).

At 2.30 pm the following witnesses will give evidence: 

• Dr Matthew Frost, Deputy Director, Policy and Knowledge Exchange, Marine Biological Association
• Professor Stephen de Mora, Chief Executive, Plymouth Marine Laboratory

The session will be open to the public on a first come, first served basis. There is no system for the prior reservation of seats. Members of the public are encouraged to arrive early as they will have to sign in at the Reception (11 on the map) which is opposite the entrance to the Exchange.
