Strategic thinking in Government: Lord Burns questioned

This will be the Committee's third evidence session of its inquiry into Strategic Thinking in Government and will take evidence first from Lord Burns, a former Permanent Secretary at the Treasury who now serves as non-executive chairman of Santander UK plc and Channel Four Television Corporation, and from Lord Carter of Coles, Chairman of McKesson Information Solutions UK, Chair of the NHS Co-operation and Competition Panel and co-founder of Westminster Health Care
This session takes place on Wednesday 8 February in Committee Room 16.

On the second panel will be the Astronomer Royal, Lord Rees of Ludlow, who is also Emeritus Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, and Sir David King, Director of the Oxford University Smith School and the former Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government.
The Committee will take the views of the witnesses on the how governments should act strategically in a complex and uncertain world. Particular issues to be explored may include:
- Lessons for government from strategic thinking in businesses
- the extent to which government policy reflects scientific evidence and is 'future-proofed'
- the role of the Treasury in supporting strategic thinking across government
