Purpose of session

This evidence session provides the committee with an opportunity to question David Bermingham, one of the first UK citizens to be extradited to the USA under the Extradition Act 2003 as one of the "Nat West Three", about the UK/US Extradition Treaty and his views on the repatriation of prisoners. Along with two former colleagues, Mr Bermingham was sentenced in February 2008 to 37 months in prison. Originally jailed in the US, they were later transferred to UK prisons and were released in August 2010.

"The debate on extradition often focuses on abstract legal issues, but we must not lose sight of the impact that extradition requests have on the individuals concerned. We have already taken evidence from the families of Babar Ahmad and Gary McKinnon. Mr Bermingham’s evidence will give us an opportunity to hear about the experience that awaits those who are extradited to the United States."
