Government to face Lords on Development Aid

The Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell MP, will give evidence to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee tomorrow about the impact and effectiveness of development aid.

The Minister will face questions about DFID’s fast-rising budget and his plan to enshrine in British law the UN target of spending 0.7% of gross national income on aid, as well as on how far aid spending serves other Government objectives.
Other questions likely to be asked include:
- Where cuts in the administrative budget at DFID will be felt?
- How DFID ensures that aid delivered through multilateral agencies is effective and offers value for money?
- Whether British aid contributes to sustained growth in the world’s poorest countries?
