The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will next week take evidence from nine university Vice-Chancellors as part of their inquiry into the state of higher education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.

Witnesses

At 3.35pm, Tuesday 17 January, Committee Room 4A, Palace of Westminster

  • Prof Sir Leszek Borysiewicz – Cambridge University
  • Dr Malcolm McVicar – Central Lancashire University
  • Prof Sir Christopher Snowden – University of Surrey
  • Prof Martin Hall – University of Salford
  • Prof Brian Cantor – University of York
  • Prof Les Ebdon – University of Bedfordshire
  • Prof Malcolm Grant – UCL
  • Dr David Grant – Cardiff University
  • Prof Dame Julia Goodfellow – University of Kent

The Committee will ask the witnesses whether students are arriving at university adequately prepared to study STEM subjects at a higher level, what universities can do to ensure that there are enough STEM subject graduates with the right skills to meet the needs of business and support economic growth, and whether the supply of postgraduate students is sufficient to fulfil the demand from business and research.

The Vice-Chancellors will also face questions about how the impending Higher Education reforms will impact on their institutions ability to offer high quality STEM courses.
