The House of Lords EU Economic and Financial Affairs and International Trade Sub-Committee will hear further evidence about European proposals for a Financial Transaction Tax tomorrow when it questions the Government, and Brussels-based thinktank Re-Define.

Witnesses

Tuesday 31 January, Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster

At 10.45am

  • Sony Kapoor, Managing Director of international think tank Re-Define

At 11.30am

  • Mark Hoban MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury

Sony Kapoor will be asked whether the financial sector is under-taxed and how a financial transaction tax would affect the functioning of international financial markets.

The likelihood of an FTT being introduced, the impact of an FTT on the City of London and the UK as a whole and how broadly the tax should be applied will all be areas that the Committee inquire about.

In addition, the Committee will ask the Financial Secretary about estimated revenues from an FTT and the effect of an FTT on economic growth. The Committee are also likely to ask the Minister about weekend reports about President Sarkozy’s plans for a French tax, proposed to be introduced in August.
