University Challenge: Lords quiz Universities Minister on role of EU in Higher Education

David Willetts MP, Universities and Science Minister, will appear before the Lords Consumer Protection and Social Policies EU Sub-Committee on Thursday 12 January, when he will face questions on what contribution the EU can make to boost mobility, provide funding for and promote best practice across Europe’s higher education sector.

  • David Willetts MP, Universities and Science Minister

The Committee will probe Mr. Willetts on issues including:

  • what the benefits of the Bologna Process have been for UK higher education and whether he foresees any significant outcomes from the next Bologna ministerial conference, which will be held in Bucharest at the end of April
  • whether the Government have any concerns about the European Credit Transfer System
  • what role the Government believes the EU can play in encouraging closer collaboration between EU higher education institutions and business
  • his views on the ‘U-Multirank Tool’
  • how the Government intends to boost the mobility of students and academics in the UK, whether he’s confident that the new immigration rules will not deter international talent from coming to the UK and how engaged the UK is in the development of the European Research Area
