Committee Allocates Final Debates Before the Summer Recess

The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.
The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:
Wednesday 11 July in the Chamber
- Debate on a motion relating to the return of VAT on Air Ambulance fuel payments (Members in charge: Guy Opperman and Hugh Bayley) (part day)
This debate was rescheduled following the Government’s decision to hold a debate on professional standards in the banking industry on 5 July. It relates to the “Return VAT on Air Ambulance fuel payments” e-petition, which has received 150,000 signatures, and issues concerning EU and domestic law on the charging of VAT to charities.
Thursday 12 July in Westminster Hall
- Debate on banking competition (Members in charge: Andrea Leadsom, Teresa Pearce, Mark Garnier, Tessa Munt, George Freeman and Penny Mordaunt).
The Committee heard this was a debate of topical interest in which Members from across the House would want to speak.
Tuesday 17 July in the Chamber
- Debate on a motion relating to the Public Administration Select Committee’s recommendation for the Prime Minister's Adviser on Ministers' Interests to be empowered to instigate his own investigations (Member in charge: Mr Bernard Jenkin) (part day)
This debate was rescheduled following the Government’s decision to hold a debate on professional standards in the banking industry on 5 July. The Motion relates to the implementation of the recommendation made by the Public Administration Select Committee in paragraph 44 of its Twenty Second Report of Session 2010-12 , ‘The Prime Minister’s Adviser on Ministers’ Interests: independent or not?’
