Government's preferred candidate for SMCP Commission questioned

• Rt Hon Alan Milburn, preferred candidate for Chair of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission

Since 2008 departmental select committees have had a formal role in the appointment process of some designated public posts which fall under the remit of their respective Government departments. The Government has invited the Education Committee to treat the new post of Chair of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission in the same way.

Following the evidence session with Mr Milburn, the Committee will agree and publish a report, setting out for the Government the Committee's views on the candidate's suitability.
