New Inquiry: European Union Data Protection Framework Proposals

The Justice Select Committee, chaired by Sir Alan Beith MP, is launching a call for written evidence for its new inquiry into European Union Data Protection Framework Proposals.

The Justice Select Committee has been asked by the European Scrutiny Committee to give its opinion on the EU Commission’s proposals to reform EU data protection laws. These are:

a) A Regulation for general and commercial data protection; and
b) A Directive covering processing in the areas of police and criminal justice

The Committee invites written evidence on 

  • Will the proposed Regulation strike the right balance between the need, on the one hand, for a proportionate, practicable but effective system of data protection in the EU, and on the other for business and public authorities not to be stifled by regulatory, financial and administrative burdens placed upon them?
  • Will the proposed Directive strike the right balance between the need, on the one hand, for a proportionate, practicable but effective system of data protection for police and criminal cooperation in the EU, and on the other for law enforcement authorities to be able to investigate crime without disproportionate financial or administrative burden?
  • Are the next steps the UK Government proposes to take during the negotiations, set out in the Summary of responses to its Call for evidence, the right approach?

Call for evidence

Written evidence should be in MS Word (no later than 2007) or rich text format (please do not send PDF’s) with as little use of colour or logos as possible, and sent by e-mail to justicecommemo@parliament.uk

The body of the e-mail must include a contact name, telephone number and postal address. The e-mail should also make clear who the submission is from. Deadline for submissions is Monday 20 August 2012.
