Annual accountability hearings

The Health Committee is today announcing arrangements for its accountability hearings with the General Medical Council and the Care Quality Commission.
The Committee proposes to take evidence from these bodies as follows:
- General Medical Council: Tuesday 4 September
- Care Quality Commission: Tuesday 11 September
There are no formal calls for evidence for these meetings, but the Committee would be pleased to receive written submissions on the work of either of these organisations in advance of the meetings.
In both cases, the deadline for submitting written submissions is midday on Tuesday 17 July.
The Committee proposes to hold similar sessions with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and with Monitor later in the autumn: details will be announced in due course.

1. In its report on Revalidation of Doctors, published in February 2011 (HC (2010-12) 557), the Committee said that it intended to exercise on behalf of Parliament the power nominally held by the Privy Council to hold the General Medical Council to account. The first such hearing took place on 14 June 2011, and the Committee’s subsequent report on the exercise was issued on 26 July 2011 as HC (2010-12) 1429.
2. In its report on the appointment of the new Chair of the Care Quality Commission in September 2010, the Committee said that it intended to hold regular annual review meetings with CQC. The first such hearing took place on 28 June 2011, and the Committee’s subsequent report on the exercise was issued on 14 September 2011 as HC (2010-12) 1430.
3. Responses from the Government and from the bodies concerned were published on 7 March 2012 as HC (2010-12) 1699.
