In March 2012 Mark Thompson announced his intention to stand down as Director General of the BBC, a post which he had held since May 2004 - the longest tenure of any Director General for over thirty years. BBC Trust Chairman Lord Patten had said in January 2012 that "sensible succession planning" was being undertaken to find a replacement. He described Mr Thompson as an "outstanding" leader.

This evidence session, provides the Committee with an opportunity to discuss Mark Thompson's achievements over the past eight years and any setbacks, staff remuneration and the future of the BBC.
