MPs hold one-off evidence session with BBC Director General

In March 2012 Mark Thompson announced his intention to stand down as Director General of the BBC, a post which he had held since May 2004 - the longest tenure of any Director General for over thirty years. BBC Trust Chairman Lord Patten had said in January 2012 that "sensible succession planning" was being undertaken to find a replacement. He described Mr Thompson as an "outstanding" leader.
