Update: Development Situation in Malawi, DFID’s Development Programme in Zambia

The Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell MP, will now attend tomorrow’s evidence session to answer questions on Malawi, a country which he recently visited. The UK’s relationship with Malawi has evolved significantly in recent months, following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika and the consequent change of government in Lilongwe. Whilst the UK’s relationship with the late President had become strained, his successor Joyce Banda is rebuilding ties with donors. The Committee will discuss how DFID is reacting to the fast-moving situation, and will also reflect on how DFID coped with the difficult circumstances prior to the change of government.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for International Development, Stephen O’Brien MP, will also attend the session, to answer questions on Zambia: the Committee will discuss issues which arose on its recent visit to the country. The Committee will also take evidence from the Heads of Office from DFID Malawi and DFID Zambia, plus representatives from World Vision and CDC.

The oral evidence session is due to start at 09.30am.
