Committee Allocates Debates for 28 June and 5 July

The Backbench Business Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session, at least 27 of which will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons, with the remainder to be taken in Westminster Hall.

The Committee has determined that the following business will take place in backbench time:

Thursday 28 June in the Chamber

  • Debate on a motion relating to fiscal measures to strengthen the green economy (Member in charge: Laura Sandys) (first half)

The Committee heard this was a topical matter of interest to Members across the House.

  • Debate on a motion relating to the Appointment of a Minister for Older People. (Members in charge: Penny Mordaunt, Margot James, Julie Hilling and Martin Vickers) (second half)

The Committee heard this was a subject of cross-party interest. The representation made reference to the Grey Pride campaign and supporting petition which has received in excess of 100,000 signatures.

Thursday 5 July in the Chamber

  • Debate on a motion relating to the return of VAT on Air Ambulance fuel payments (Members in charge: Guy Opperman and Hugh Bayley) (part day)

This debate relates to the “Return VAT on Air Ambulance fuel payments” e-petition, which has received 150,000 signatures, and issues concerning EU and domestic law on the charging of VAT to charities.

Thursday 5 July in Westminster Hall

  • Debate on adoption (Member in charge: Sheryll Murray) (up to 90 minutes)

The Committee heard this was a subject of topical interest which affects the constituencies of all Members.
