Debate on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy
16 March 2012
The Backbench Business Committee scheduled a debate on Thursday 15 March 2012 on reform of the Commons Fisheries Policy. Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee Miss Anne McIntosh appeared before the Backbench Business Committee to request this debate
The Committee received this representation for a debate from the Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee following the publication of its report on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) on 24 February. The Committee heard the European Parliament will shortly be finalising its position on the CFP and the Commission expects to produce the final version of the proposals before the summer recess. The Committee also heard that a debate would enable the House to express its views ahead of the final round of negotiations.

Backbench Business Committee
The Backbench Business Committee meets every week to consider requests for debates from any backbench Members of Parliament on any subject.
The Committee then has to decide how to allocate the very limited Parliamentary time it has at its disposal; demand always outstrips supply. The Committee's meetings are always conducted in public and can be watched on Parliament TV.
