Minister responds on key aspects of education policy

Written evidence provided by the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, to follow up oral evidence given recently to the Committee is published today.
It addresses some of the broad topics raised in oral evidence on 31 January (e.g. school accountability and improvement) as well as specific issues raised in certain questions (e.g. admissions policy).

Commenting on this material Graham Stuart, Chair of the Education Committee, said:
"We are really pleased the Secretary of State is willing to continue the discussions begun during our Twitter session on some of the key issues in education policy. Everyone agrees we need to close the attainment gap between rich and poor, but the question is how do we go about doing it.
I know many of the Committee members have issues they want to pursue with the Secretary of State, but I hope we can have some further discussions about changes to the accountability system, teacher quality, and how we can best support further education colleges."
The Committee held an oral evidence session with Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Education, on 31 January 2012 at which many questions were taken from more than 5000 suggested by members of the public via Twitter.
Following the session, the Secretary of State confirmed he would be delighted to return to give further oral evidence to the Committee if requested.
