The Energy and Climate Change Committee will hold its second public evidence session on ‘The road to UNFCCC COP 18 and beyond’ at 9.05 am on Thursday 17 May 2012, in the Grimond Room, Portcullis House.

Professor Sir David King – Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, former UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of the Government Office of Science.

What will be covered?

This session will explore the following the following questions:

  • How successful has the UNFCCC process been to date and is it the best mechanism for reaching international agreement on tackling climate change?
  • Are current emissions reduction commitments adequate?
  • Has the Kyoto Protocol been a success so far?
  • What lessons could be learned from the Montreal Protocol for CFCs?
  • Do we need a legally binding global agreement? What should this look like?
  • The funds for international climate finance are to be raised from a mixture of public and private sources. How should this balance work in practice?
