Martin Taylor served as chief executive of Barclays from 1994 to 1998. He was a member of the Independent Commission on Banking chaired by Sir John Vickers. The Independent Commission recommended a package of measures, consisting of ring-fencing vital banking services, increasing banks’ loss-absorbency and enhancing competition in the banking sector.
Martin Taylor worked as a journalist for Reuters before joining the Financial Times in 1978, heading the Lex commentary team, and was Chief Executive of Courtaulds Textiles from 1987 to 1993. On leaving Barclays, he became Chairman of retailer WH Smith from 1999 to 2003 and an international adviser to investment bank Goldman Sachs from 1999 to 2005.
Since 2005 he has been Chairman of Swiss agrochemicals firm Syngenta.
