  • Prof. John Kay, British economist

John Kay is one of Britain's foremost micro-economists. He is particularly known for his work on the relationships between business and economics. In recent years he has commented widely on the banking sector: from structural reform in his renowned Narrow Banking paper, to competition and more recently, the study of equity markets.

His career has spanned academic work, think tanks (he was Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies from 1979-1986), business schools, company directorships, consultancies and investment companies. He has also authored a number of books, including, most recently, Obliquity: Why our goals are best achieved indirectly. He chaired the Review of UK Equity Markets and Long-Term Decision-Making which reported to the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills in July 2012.

Professor Kay is a visiting Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, a Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and director of several public companies. He writes a weekly column to the Financial Times.
