Following the publication of the Liikanen Report last week, the House of Lords EU Sub Committee that is investigating EU banking reform will question experts about subjects such as the European Central Bank (ECB) and banking union.

The Lords EU Sub Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs launched its inquiry into EU banking reform in July, and the Committee will now start taking evidence from expert witnesses to inform its inquiry.
On Tuesday 9 October, at 11.00, the Committee will question the following:

  • Professor Kern Alexander: expert in international financial regulation and special advisor to the EU Parliament’s Financial Services Advisory Panel
  • Professor Rosa Lastra: professor in International Financial and Monetary Law

Witnesses will be asked for their views on the recent report from the Finnish central bank governor, Erkki Liikanen, and will also face specific questions on subjects including:

  • The European supervisory framework and the role of the ECB;
    The proposed delineation between the ECB and the European Banking Authority;
  • The impact of the proposal for a Recovery and Resolution Directive;
  • How the UK would be affected by a banking union on the UK given that the UK Government have made clear the UK will not take part in the fundamental elements of a banking union;

The evidence session will take place at 11:00 on Tuesday 9 October in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
