Age-related tax allowances e-petition

The House of Commons prorogued on 25 April 2013. Given this, the general debate relating to the e-petition on age-related tax allowances will not now take place on Monday 29 April.
The age-related tax allowances e-petition will remain open for the future Backbench Business Committee to consider for debate. A new Backbench Business Committee will be formed in the new session following the Queen’s Speech.
Katy Clark made a representation to the Committee on 16 April on behalf of Kelvin Hopkins for a debate on the age-related tax allowances e-petition.
Please note: the general debate relating to the e-petition on age-related allowances has been rescheduled to take place on Monday 9 September 2013.
Representations received on 16 April
At its public meeting on Tuesday 16 April, in addition to the representation from Katy Clark, the Committee also heard representations from:
- Jane Ellison and Caroline Lucas for a debate relating to the Shaker Aamer e-petition.
The representation requested i) 90 minutes in either Chamber at the earliest opportunity and ii) a debate on a motion in the Chamber in the next session of Parliament.
The Committee was sympathetic to the representation and keen to ensure the topic was debated at the earliest opportunity and before the end of the current session. To this end, the Committee advised the Member to apply for a debate in the Speaker’s ballot. Jane Ellison was successful and the Shaker Aamer e-petition will be debated in Westminster Hall on Wednesday 24 April at 9.30 am.

The Committee is unlikely to have any further time to allocate for backbench debates until the next session.
