MPs question IFS on “Fiscal Sustainability in an Independent Scotland”

The Scottish Affairs Committee looks into The Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) paper: “Fiscal Sustainability in an Independent Scotland”, published in November 2013.

This work compares projections on tax and spending and the consequent borrowing and debt levels for the UK as a whole, and for Scotland as an independent country. The IFS examine the long-run fiscal pressures that an independent Scotland may face, how these would differ from those facing the UK, and the size of the fiscal consolidation that may be required to put Scotland’s public finances on a sustainable path.
The Committee will be asking about how firm these projections are and what an independent Scotland would need to achieve long-run fiscal sustainability.
