The House of Lords Constitution Committee will tomorrow take evidence from Oliver Letwin MP, Minister for Government Policy, as well as Labour Leader in the House of Lords, Baroness Royall of Blaisdon and Lord Falconer of Thoroton, Labour Spokesman for Constitutional Issues in the House of Lords.

The sessions are the Committee’s last in its inquiry into the constitutional implications of coalition government.

Witnesses

At 10.30am, Wednesday 11 December 2013, Committee room 1, Palace of Westminster:

  • Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords
  • Lord Falconer of Thoroton, Opposition Spokesman for Constitutional Issues and adviser on Planning and Transition into Government

and at approximately 11.15am

  • Oliver Letwin MP, Minister for Government Policy

Likely questions

With Baroness Royall and Lord Falconer the Committee is likely to discuss the impact of coalition government on the House of Lords and the constitutional status of provisions in a coalition agreement as opposed to the manifesto of a single-party government. The session is likely also to cover how the working relationship between parties in the House of Lords has been affected by the coalition government and what preparations the Labour party is making for the possibility of future hung parliaments.

With Oliver Letwin the Committee is likely to ask whether the coalition government considered putting the coalition agreement to a House of Commons vote in 2010, how it was decided on which issues the coalition parties could adopt different positions and how the system of cabinet committees has operated under the coalition.
