Evidence on Parliament's Ombudsman service

This is the third session of PASC’s inquiry into Parliament’s Ombudsman Service. Members will hear from different ombudsmen about the operation of their service, including those in devolved nations whose responsibilities and powers differ from that of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO).

Members will also hear from private sector ombudsmen about the way in which they deal with complaints, and the Local Government Ombudsman, who works closely with PHSO in respect of investigations.

Particular issues to be explored may include:

• The importance placed on the varying roles of an ombudsman: dealing with individual cases; identifying systemic failure; and inspecting services;
• How the establishment of different ombudsmen differs from that of PHSO, and what practices or powers it could be useful for PHSO to adopt; and
• The viability of a single public services ombudsman for England.
