The House of Lords Constitution Committee took evidence from the President and Deputy President of the UK Supreme Court. The Committee heard from Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury and Lord Hope of Craighead in their first annual evidence session with the Committee

The Committee questioned the witnesses on a number of important issues affecting the judiciary, including the role of the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, whether the views of the judiciary are adequately represented in Parliament and Government, and recent proposed changes to the process of applying for judicial review.

The functioning of the Supreme Court was also discussed, including the independence of the court’s staff from Government, and its funding.

The session also covered the proposed changes to the judicial appointments system in the Crime and Courts Bill.
