House of Lords seminar on the impact of austerity in the EU

On 31 January from 10.15am to 11.45am the House of Lords EU Economic and Financial Affairs Sub-Committee will hold a seminar on the impact of austerity in the EU.

This seminar will investigate the impacts of austerity from a number of different angles including the macroeconomic impacts, the social impacts, the impacts on small businesses as well as looking at country-specific experiences.

A panel of experts will speak on these issues and this will be followed by a Q&A session. The panel will include:

  •  Vicky Pryce, Senior Managing Director at the finance consultancy firm FTI and former Joint Head of the Government Economic Service
  • Stephen Alambritis, Leader of Merton Council and former Commissioner at the Equality and Human Rights Commission
  • Holger Schmeiding, Chief Economist at Berenberg Bank
  • Dr Waltraud Shelkle, Senior Lecturer, LSE

The Q&A session will involve both Members of the Committee as well as the wider audience. This audience will consist of academics, representatives from Embassies, the Commission, HM Treasury, the FSA and think tanks.

The seminar will be held in Committee Room 4a, Palace of Westminster.
