This is the third session of the Public Administration Select Committee’s (PASC) inquiry into the Future of the Civil Service and will focus on the experience of former civil servants and ministers within Whitehall

The Committee will first take evidence from the former Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Home Civil Service, Lord Richard Wilson, and Dame Janet Paraskeva, who served as First Civil Service Commissioner between 2006 and 2010. In the second half of the session, the Committee will hear from four former ministers: Lord Adonis, Sir Nick Harvey, Nick Herbert and Caroline Spelman, about their experience of working with the Civil Service.

Particular issues to be explored may include:

  • Current concerns about competency in Whitehall
  • proposals to increase ministerial involvement in permanent secretary appointments; and
  • the Government’s Civil Service Reform Plan.
