Jack Straw and David Davis give evidence on Prisoner Voting

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on the Draft Prisoner Voting Bill will this week take evidence from former Home Secretary and Justice Secretary Jack Straw and former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis.

The Committee will ask Mr Straw and Mr Davis, who jointly triggered a vote on the issue in the Commons in early 2011, whether they would be prepared to contemplate allowing some categories of prisoners to vote.
Jack Straw will also be asked about his time as Justice Secretary, when, according to his autobiography, he kicked the issue of prisoner voting ‘into touch’; he will be asked whether that delay has simply caused greater problems for the government.
Both witnesses will be asked what it is about the issue of prisoner voting that has led them to suggest that the UK should refuse to comply with a judgment of the European Court of Human Rights.
