Lords gather evidence on cigarette smuggling

The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Home Affairs, Health and Education will be conducting enhanced scrutiny of the EU's strategy to tackle the illicit trade in tobacco products on Wednesday 17 July.

The Committee will question the witness on issues including:

  • what the main drivers of the illicit trade in tobacco products in the EU are;
  • why the smuggling of ‘main brands’ has decreased in the EU;
  • what effect the economic crisis has had on the smuggling of illicit tobacco in the EU;
  • how the success of the strategy will be measured and evaluated; and
  • the introduction of plain packaging for tobacco products, including any impact on the production of counterfeit goods
