Government urged to publish draft legislation on dangerous dogs

Anne McIntosh, Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee has today written to the Defra Secretary of State, Owen Paterson, to request that he secure a Home Office commitment to urgent publication of draft legislation on tackling dangerous dogs for scrutiny by MPs.
In February, the Committee published its Dog Control and Welfare report criticising the Government for comprehensively failing to tackle the problem of out-of-control dogs.
Publishing the letter Anne McIntosh MP said today:
“During our recent inquiry looking into the Government’s proposals for tackling irresponsible dog ownership, we heard from those tragically affected by some of the thousands of dog attacks which take place each year.
“Our report lamented the Government’s delay in bringing forward proposals and found the planned measures to be woefully inadequate for dealing with the increasing problem of dangerous dogs.
“We now urge Ministers to publish draft legislation urgently so that MPs can assess in detail whether Government proposals will adequately address an issue affecting so many individuals and communities.”
