Impact of changes to housing benefit changes in Wales

Changes to housing benefit proposed by the UK Government, including the reduction in benefit based on "under-occupation", or having an unoccupied bedroom, will affect households in Wales. Almost half of working age housing benefit claimants in Wales live in under-occupied social housing. This is more than anywhere else in Great Britain.

The Welsh Affairs Committee will hold its final evidence session on this issue with Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, Department for Work and Pensions. The Committee will examine the issue of under-occupancy and the findings of the pilot project run by Bron Afon Community Housing on the direct payment of the housing element of Universal Credit to social housing tenants, due to come into effect nationally in October 2013.
