Inquiry into Genuine Economic and Monetary Union hears from Treasury Secretary

The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs will next Tuesday 19 November take evidence from Nicky Morgan MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury.

- Nicky Morgan MP, Economic Secretary to the HM Treasury
- Peter Curwen, Director Europe at the HM Treasury
She will be asked whether the UK is having less and less influence in Brussels and what can be done to address this.
The Lords Committee is investigating EU plans for Genuine Economic and Monetary Union (GEMU), exploring how effective they will be, and looking at the UK’s position in relation to them.
The Committee will also ask the Treasury Secretary questions such as:
- Are there any circumstances in which you could envisage the UK participating in any elements of GEMU?
- What is the reaction amongst EU colleagues to the UK’s rejectionist stance on key elements of GEMU?
- Does the UK, by calling for EMU reform from the sidelines, do itself no favours?
- Should the UK government be concerned about plans for banking union, or should it aim to be fully on board?
- What would be the implications for the UK of the creation of an autonomous euro area budget?
