Lords EU Committee hears from Keep Britain Tidy and packaging bodies

The Committee are looking into the EU's contribution to food waste prevention in light of its aspiration to half food waste by 2020.

In the first evidence session the Committee will focus on how food waste is defined and the difference between food waste at the end of the supply chain and food loss at earlier stages as well as the food safety regulations and whether they inhibit charities from re-distributing unsold food to those in need.

In the second session the Committee will quiz the witnesses on what contribution packaging can make to ensure food stays fresh for longer and whether the European Commission's target of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2020 is realistic or whether it would be better to have a less ambitious by legally binding target.
