The Joint Committee on the draft Prisoner Voting Bill will this week hold two evidence sessions; they will hear from solicitors who are representing a number of prisoners in their applications to the European Court of Human Rights with regard to the UK's ban on prisoner voting, as well as journalists specialising in legal and human rights issues

Witnesses

Wednesday 30th October, Committee Room 6, Palace of Westminster

9.30am

  • Benjamin Burrows and Sean Humber, Leigh Day Solicitors
  • Tony Kelly, Taylor & Kelly Solicitors

10.30am

  • Adam Wagner, founding editor of the UK Human Rights Blog and barrister at 1 Crown Office Row
  • Joshua Rozenberg, journalist specialising in legal issues and presenter of Radio 4’s Law in Action.

In the first session the Committee will question the witnesses about the motivations of the prisoners who bring legal cases in regards to the right to vote and also how such cases are funded.

The second session will focus on the British media's reporting of the European Court of Human Rights and the regular conflation in the media of the Court with the separate issue of EU law. The witnesses will be asked what can be done to improve the accuracy of reporting on EU legal issues.
