Joint Committee hears evidence from solicitors and journalists

The Joint Committee on the draft Prisoner Voting Bill will this week hold two evidence sessions; they will hear from solicitors who are representing a number of prisoners in their applications to the European Court of Human Rights with regard to the UK's ban on prisoner voting, as well as journalists specialising in legal and human rights issues

In the first session the Committee will question the witnesses about the motivations of the prisoners who bring legal cases in regards to the right to vote and also how such cases are funded.
The second session will focus on the British media's reporting of the European Court of Human Rights and the regular conflation in the media of the Court with the separate issue of EU law. The witnesses will be asked what can be done to improve the accuracy of reporting on EU legal issues.
