The Scottish Affairs Committee meets trade union representatives to hear the outcome of their talks with Scottish government, about the future of the defence industry in a separate Scotland.

Chair's comments

Speaking on Wednesday 13 August, Ian Davidson MP, the Chair of the Scottish Affairs Committee, said:

"Ever since the referendum was announced Scottish workers in the defence industries have been trying to clarify what the impact of separation would be on their jobs and their future.

Trade union representatives have met with the Scottish Affairs Committee on a number of occasions and we have agreed that answers can only come from the Scottish Government.

Today the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions will have a formal meeting with the Scottish Government, and though it is only scheduled to last 45 minutes, they hope that the First Minister, who has agreed to meet them, will be able to answer their questions, which have been submitted in advance.

Tomorrow the 14 strong delegation will meet the Scottish Affairs Committee to discuss the talks and clarify whether they are satisfied.

For months Scottish Defence workers have been seeking these assurances from the Scottish Government.

Now that a meeting is taking place we hope that they will be satisfied.

If not, then the Scottish Affairs Committee will want to know why."
